November 8 - General Meeting: Wills and trusts; TRTF.
December 13 – Holiday Luncheon, Junior League of Houston, 1811 Briar Oaks Ln, Houston, 77027. This is a ticketed event open to all who support our scholarship program.
January 10 – Volunteer Activity – more information will follow
February 14 – General Meeting: Riding Metro
March 14 – General Meeting: Living a Healthy Life

May 9 – General Meeting: Celebrate a great year!Why You Should Join HART and TRTA
1. To have a voice on the issues that confront our Texas state government regarding our retirement benefits and health insurance.
2. To be able to attend monthly HART meetings to stay informed about issues that affect our future as retired educators.
3. To be able to support HART’s programs which include Books For Children, HART’s Scholarship Fund, HART’s Continuing Education Fund for Teachers, and HART’s support of the Stilwell Memorial Residence for Retired Educators.
4. To be able to participate in monthly fun field trips to places of interest in the greater Houston area.
5. To meet new friends, connect with old friends and colleagues, and most importantly to have fun!
Membership and Benefits
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN THE HOUSTON ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED TEACHERS?
- An annuitant or a beneficiary receiving an annuity from a teacher retirement system can become a member of HART and TRTA upon payment of local dues and state dues.
- Any person interested in public education and willing to work to achieve the purposes of TRTA upon payment of local dues and state dues.

* For example, we meet every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to make lunches for children too young to get free meals from school. If you would like to join us the address is 330 Garden Oaks Blvd.
MEMBERSHIP IS $50.00 PER YEAR
$15.00 of the fee is for HART membership.
$35.00 of the fee is for membership in the Texas Retired Teachers Association.To have your voice heard in Austin, your membership in both organizations is vital!

- Maintain contribution for TRS-Care retiree health insurance.
- Preserve TRS Texas Traditional Defined Benefit Retirement Plan

HART Scholarship and Continuing Education Funds
Each spring, the Houston Association of Retired Teachers awards up to five scholarships to junior or senior students who are enrolled in a college of education. We rotate through the following universities: University of Houston, St. Thomas University, Houston Baptist University, Rice University, and Texas Southern University.

The 2024 HARTScholarship winners attend Rice University and are working toward their Master of
Arts in Teaching, specifically math. Mitch Blakely, who is a lawyer by
training, discovered he has a passion for teaching while subbing in a math
classroom. Nma Ejiawoko earned her BS in Mathematics from South Carolina State
University in 2022 and is a student-teacher resident in Spring Branch district
this term. Gregory Kabay comes from a family of teachers: his parents are
members of HART; his wife is a teacher in HISD; and Gregory taught at Parker
Elementary in Houston ISD for fifteen years. Rathna Ramesh, who received a BA
in Social Policy Analysis from Rice University in December of 2023, strives to
make her classroom a space where students can enjoy learning.Sechan Yoon, who tutored students in Guam and received his BA
in Mathematics from Rice University in 2023, wants to be mindful of holding
every one of his students to a high standard and believes that every student
can achieve great things both in and outside of the classroom. Each recipient
will receive $1500 to be applied toward the summer or fall semester of 2024.
