I hope everyone had meaningful time with family and friends over the extended holiday, and is now ready to get to work.
The Texas Legislature will convene on January 11 to pass bills and make speeches relevant to the economic well being of retired teachers. TRTA and HART are fighting for a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) to our TRS pension plan. Since the great majority of Texas teachers do not receive Social Security, we use our TRS pension which relies on the Texas legislature for any adjustments such as a COLA. We have not had a COLA since 2004, and that was capped at $100 per month. All HART members are encouraged to join us in Austin April 11-12 for Day at the Capitol to advocate for a substancial COLA for all retired teachers. The following article does a good job of explaing this issue: https://www.heraldbanner.com/news/inflation-impacting-retired-texas-teachers-who-seek-pension-boost/article_9c2c713e-d082-11ec-9ff6-3f07465b695e.html.
